Introducing the poetry collection of Rumi Taugozi Javanrudi's Fa'a'eh and its stylistic characteristics

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sayyid ‘Abd al‑Rahim, known by the pen name Ma‘dumi and widely referred to as Maulawi Kurd (1806-1883), was a prominent poet and mystic of the 13th century. In addition to his Kurdish divan, he composed three didactic literature verses on theology in Persian, Kurdish, and Arabic. His work Fawa’ih, composed of 525 verses in the hazaj mosaddas mahzuf meter, is of particular significance in Persian instructional literature. This work was published in Baghdad in 1995 by Mola ‘Abd al‑Karim Mudarris, along with his commentary titled Fawa’id al‑Fawa’ih (Rizwan, 2021, p. 25). This study addresses several key questions: How did Mawlawi approach the composition of Fawa’ih? What stylistic features and innovations characterize his work? and Does the poem require a more precise critical edition? These questions are explored through a stylistic analysis of the poem’s text.

METHODOLOGY: The research follows a descriptive, library‑based methodology.

FINDINGS: Stylistically, Fawa’ih exhibits several notable characteristics. Linguistically, it shows certain traits of the Khorasani style, such as concise sentence structures; in many cases, a sentence is completed within a single hemistich, and sometimes two or three sentences in one. The poem contains a high frequency of Arabic vocabulary. In the realm of literary devices, Mawlawi relies heavily on simile and sarcasm, alongside a sophisticated use of pun. On the conceptual level, the work reflects elements of the Iraqi style, particularly in its engagement with Sufism and mysticism. Alongside presenting Ash‘ari Theology, Mawlawi discusses spiritual discipline and the Sufi path, portraying Sufism as a framework through which Ash‘ari doctrines can be expressed. Overall, Fawa’ih may be described as an introspective and contemplative work. And with the discovery of two additional authoritative manuscripts of Fawa’ih, combined with issues such as the editor’s method of transcription, the omission of variant readings, the lack of verse numbering, and other editorial inconsistencies, a new scholarly critical edition of the text appears necessary.
