Analysis of the Rhetorical Purposes of the Call and the Monaada in Tarikh-e Vassaf

Ziba Azhir , Barat Mohammadi (Author in Charge), Abbas Baghinezhad

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The rhetoric of the call and the manaada is considered one of the effective linguistic tools in creating semantic diversity and inducing secondary purposes in literary texts. Tarikh-e Vassaf, as one of the most prominent examples of fabricated and commissioned prose of the Ilkhanid period, provides a suitable context for examining the rhetorical functions of this linguistic structure. The aim of the present study is to analyze the methods of using the call and the manaada and explain its secondary rhetorical purposes in Tarikh-e Vassaf.

METHODOLOGY: This study was conducted in a descriptive-analytical manner and based on library studies. The data were collected through document analysis and extraction of examples of the call and the manaada from the text of four volumes of Tarikh-e Vassaf and then analyzed based on the principles of classical rhetoric.

FINDINGS: The research findings show that Wassaf al-Hadra consciously and purposefully used rhetorical techniques throughout his work and used the call and the manaada to enhance the emotional and persuasive aspects of the text. The explicit use of the word call in many cases, in addition to creating a sense of urgency and harmony with the traditional and formal style of Ilkhanid prose, has enabled the direct transmission of the author"s emotions and highlighting his intended semantic intentions.

CONCLUSION: The research results indicate that in Wassaf"s history, the call and the manaada have various functions such as informing and reporting, requesting and requesting, reprimanding and blaming, expressing happiness and gratitude, encouraging, persuading, and seizing the opportunity. Also, by consciously presenting and delaying the call and the manaada in the construction of the sentence, Wassaf sought to emphasize the meaning and instill a special emotional charge, and in this way, he strengthened the rhetorical role of this linguistic structure in advancing his discursive purposes.
