Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Schemas are recurring patterns that shape individuals’ perspectives, tendencies, and emotions from childhood and influence their attitudes and behaviors in adulthood. Schemas emerge to help individuals understand the world around them, their interactions with others, and even with themselves. However, some schemas develop into self-defeating emotional and cognitive patterns formed in the mind, causing various problems throughout an individual’s life; these are referred to as maladaptive schemas. This study aims to examine the early maladaptive schemas manifested in the female characters of the stories within the theoretical framework proposed by the renowned schema theorist Jeffrey Young.
METHODOLOGY: This research is based on library research, and the methodology is descriptive-analytical, employing qualitative content analysis. The study corpus consists of eight stories from the collection Hameh Ofoq (All Horizons) written by Fariba Vafi and published by Cheshmeh Publishing.
FINDINGS: Preliminary findings indicate that schemas such as subjugation, self-sacrifice, emotional deprivation, defectiveness/shame, abandonment, instability, and possibly failure can be identified in the female characters of these stories.
CONCLUSION: These schemas reflect the challenges faced by contemporary women, as well as the hidden anger, fears, and suffering resulting from cultural and economic limitations portrayed by the author. The narratives depict maladaptive schemas and their consequences within society. This collection of stories provides a suitable context for understanding women’s inner experiences and their maladaptive patterns through the perspective of Jeffrey Young’s schema theory.
