Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Abdul Ali Ehtesham al-Dawla, who is known by the pen name "Abdi," was a poet of the literary revival in the second half of the 13th century AH. He was the son of Farhad Mirza Motamed al-Dawla and one of the praise singers of Nasser al-Din Shah and several other notable figures in Qajar. The only complete manuscript of his Divan is kept in the library of the Islamic Consultative Assembly. This article introduced this poet and examined the stylistic features of his poems.
METHODOLOGY: This research is based on library studies and follows a descriptive-analytical approach. The complete manuscript of the poet"s Divan constitutes the statistical population of the study. After reading and studying the book, notes were taken on three stylistic aspects (linguistic, intellectual, and literary). The research was conducted based on an analysis of this data.
FINDINGS: Abdi used a variety of Persian poetic meters and used obscure rhymes and verbal, nominal, compound and literal refrains. His divan has a strong inner harmony in terms of its use of rhetorical figures and the high frequency of figures of speech, especially similes and metaphorical combinations. His poems are usually simple and sometimes somewhat complex due to the use of old and obsolete words.
CONCLUSION: Abdi is a poet of few words but he speaks selectively. Although he follows poets such as Rudaki, Naser Khosrow, Khaghani, Farrokhi, and Hafiz and is indebted to these poets in the creation of panegyric and didactic odes and mystical Ghazals, his work is not an absolute imitation; rather, in his ability to express, he is indebted to his inherent talent. Intellectually, the most important characteristic of his style is the variety of topics he addresses in his Divan. While Abdi is a capable panegyrist, he has thought-provoking didactic poems. He is a master at describing nature and beautifully narrates passionate mystical love.
