A Study of the Intellectual Dimension of Fānī Kashmiri’s Masdar al-Āsār

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The composition of naẓīrehs to Nezami Ganjavi’s Khamsa is one of the most enduring currents of literary production in the Persian tradition, attracting numerous poets across various regions. Among these, Masdar al-Āthār by Fānī Kashmiri—an eminent poet and mystic of the eleventh century AH—is a distinguished example of the continuity of a didactic-mystical poem composed in deep connection with Makhzan al-Asrār. The present study aims to examine the semantic and structural foundations of Masdar al-Āthār and to analyze its position within the continuation of Nezami’s naẓīreh-writing tradition.
METHODOLOGY: The method of inquiry in this study is descriptive-analytical; accordingly, the objectives have been achieved through the use of library sources and note-taking from these references.
FINDINGS: Investigations show that Masdar al-Āthār is based on three major axes: theoretical and practical mysticism; foundational teachings of the principles and branches of religion; and an exposition of Islamic rituals such as prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and pilgrimage. To present these themes, Fānī employs a narrative-homiletic model whose spirit is indebted to Makhzan al-Asrār; however, at the level of expression, it embodies indigenous aesthetic tendencies and distinctive spiritual elements of Kashmir. The anecdotes function as an artistic-didactic framework that allows moral and religious concepts to be conveyed in a concise, symbolic, and well-measured manner.
CONCLUSION: Masdar al-Āthār may be regarded as one of the deliberate efforts to reinterpret Nezami’s didactic-mystical heritage within the Kashmiri context—an oeuvre which, despite its conscious adherence to Makhzan al-Asrār, establishes its own independent identity through its explicit inclination toward religious instruction, balanced narrative structure, and choice of vocabulary consonant with Kashmiri prose and poetic traditions. The findings indicate that Fānī, through the use of spiritual abstraction and moderate rhetorical arrangement, has succeeded in creating a naẓīreh that is not a mere imitation but a purposeful re-creation of Nezami’s ethical-philosophical tradition—a re-creation whose value is notably significant for understanding the evolution of didactic-mystical literature in the mid-Safavid period.
